On the occasion of the exhibition Asco: Elite of the Obscure, A Retrospective, 1972–1987 at LACMA, Willie F. Herrón III has produced a mural in an alley in City Terrace, a community in East Los Angeles. This new mural, East of No-West, is the artist’s homage to his years of participation in Asco. The subject is a photograph by Harry Gamboa of Asco’s early performance Walking Mural. In this new iteration, the peripatetic action is returned to the wall in an ironic gesture that embraces the complexities of documenting the ephemeral action, yet celebrates the performance’s transformation into larger-than-life iconography.
